Auto liability may cover direct accidental damage caused by a truck operator, but unless your insured has a full suite of coverages included as part of a package, that’s where their coverage ends. Damage to the insured’s vehicle, damage to the cargo they’re hauling, or even the cost of cleanup – all these things are up to the insured to cover separately.
That’s where trucking ancillary coverages come into play.
Automobile Physical Damage coverage (often abbreviated as APD) comes in to cover damage to the unit itself. If you’re familiar with the phrases “comp and collision”, it’s in a similar vein to that coverage – except it’s designed to cover trucking clients.
Motor Truck Cargo coverage (often abbreviated as MTC) comes in to cover damage to the cargo the insured is hauling on someone else’s behalf. Optional coverages here can include refrigeration (AKA reefer) breakdown, non-owned trailer interchange coverage, towing and cleanup coverage, or in some cases, owned freight coverage.
Even Truckers’ General Liability (often just called GL, but sometimes abbreviated as TGL) coverage counts as trucking ancillary! Some trucking brokers will require GL coverage in order to take a contract, but not all trucking GL carriers are written alike.
Our expertise in trucking ancillary will help you find the right policy for your insured – whether that’s cargo including on-hook coverage, physical damage for a unit that’s brand new with a high TIV, or general liability for a risk hauling sand, dirt and gravel from construction sites.
Give us a call – we’ll be happy to help you out!
